Hey, Louisvillians — With winter on the way weather you like it or not, we couldn’t resist peeping at some of the major weather trends headed to town.
Thanks to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, we know what temperatures and precipitation trends to expect for Dec., Jan., + Feb. While exact weather conditions like snowfall typically can’t be predicted more than a week in advance, accurate seasonal outlooks can help communities prepare for what winter will bring. Here’s what’s coming in our city:

Think warm. This winter, there is a 40-50% chance of temperatures being higher than normal.
🌨️ Precipitation
Let it snow...or rain. Louisville’s precipitation levels are predicted to be 33-40% above normal snow and rainfall this winter making for a wetter-than-average season. DYK — Louisville received a record snowfall of 22.4 inches in Feb. 1998.
By the month: December
LOU’s average low-temperature in December is 31.8°F, but we might see more days this year closer to the average high-temperature — 44.1°F — because of the anticipated temp rise. It’s also the month with the shortest amount of days with an average of 9.5 hours of daylight.
By the month: January
Louisville’s lows in January are 25.9°F on average, with highs of 38.8°F. January tends to be the coldest month in the city + is typically one of the driest months out of the year with rain only accumulating 1.06 inches on average. Bonus: here are the NOAA’s winter safety tips. ❄️
By the month: February
In February, the average high and low temps are generally the same as in January — varying between 28°F and 43°F — in Derby City. February is a month where the humidity is at its highest, with an average of 80%. It is also the month with the most snowfall. Snow falls on average 6.9 days + up to 1.06 inches.
