Take a step back in time at Sandbox VR

This new virtual reality experience lets you explore the prehistoric world.

Hey Louisville, Editor Declan here. No, I haven’t really been transported to the far past. It’s all been a simulation nestled in one corner of the Mall St. Matthews.

I recently had a chance to check out Sandbox VR’s new “Age of Dinosaurs” experience. I’ve only ever experienced at-home VR consoles, so this was a real treat. Using tracking bracelets, anklets, vests, and a set of goggles, the game tracks your movements in a 3D space to put you into a fully-immersive environment.

No, this isn’t my time machine — this is one of the motion-tracking bracelets Sandbox uses to place you into the game.

The ~30 minute game has you sent back in time to learn about dinosaurs, feed them, save them from volcanoes, and snap photos of their most dramatic moments. “Age of Dinosaurs” was developed in partnership with the Natural History Museum of London, so it’s grounded in some real deal science.

If you have a kid at home who is obsessed with dinosaurs, or if you’ve wanted to try virtual reality games but aren’t so into the shoot-em-ups, I think this is a great place to start. It’s not quite a “Star Trek” holodeck, but it’s about as close as we’ve got.
