Louisville’s Lynn Family Stadium to host NWSL Championship, USL Championship playoff game

A few years ago, you may not have thought of Derby City as the epicenter of professional soccer. But this month alone, the city will host two major soccer games at Lynn Family Stadium.

Kicking things off first is LouCity FC against Charlotte Independence on Sat., Nov. 13. It’s the team’s second matchup in the USL Championship Playoffs after beating Miami FC last weekend 1-0.

Here are some fast facts about the USL Championship Playoffs + LouCity FC:

  • The USL Championship Playoffs began on Nov. 5, with 16 teams across the country facing off for a final championship game on Nov. 28.
  • In 2018, LouCity FC became the first USL team to win back-to-back championship titles.
  • LouCity FC’s first matchup in the playoffs against Miami FC drew a record-breaking crowd of 9,097 soccer fans to Lynn Family Stadium.

Up next is the National Women’s Soccer League Championship on Nov. 20. Racing Louisville FC won’t be playing, but it will be the first time that Lynn Family Stadium will appear on network television as the game will be broadcast on CBS.

Here are some fast facts about the NWSL Championship + Lynn Family Stadium:

  • The game was originally scheduled to play in Portland, Oregon but players campaigned to move it to Louisville because Providence Park’s playing terrain is turf rather than grass. Players also advocated to move the game to a timezone more suitable for fans + players.
  • The NWSL semifinals take place on Sun., Nov. 14. The four teams remaining include OL Reign, Washington Spirit, Portland Thorns FC + Chicago Red Stars.
  • Lynn Family Stadium opened in July 2020 + has capacity for 15,304 fans. It’s named after Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn, who are also the namesake of UofL’s soccer stadium.
