Join the sourdough revolution in Louisville

The bread type is more popular than ever, and we’re here to help you find the best loaves in Derby City, or start making your own.

Two loaves of sourdough bread, with artistic patterns in the flour on their tops. They are rounded loaves, and sunlight is casting shadows on portions of them as they sit on what looks like a wooden shelf.

Sourdough can blur the line between art and food.

Starter your engines. Sourdough is soaring in popularity, according to Google Trends, and so is interest in making your own. And yes, it’s somehow even more popular than it was in 2020.

If you’re among those baking some new habits into your life via flour and yeast, here are a few ways to get in on the action in Louisville:

  • The sourdough specialists at Baking Layne are helping bandwagon-hoppers in 2025 with a new class designed for smaller groups of 5-6 people.
  • Get started on your journey to sourdough mastery at one of MozzaPi’s Intro to Sourdough classes. Heads up: These sell out fast.
  • Family-owned culinary school Cooking at the Cottage first opened in 2010, and has a few classes for sourdough beginners on its calendar.

For those who prefer their loaves made by an expert, there’s a bunch of spots around town to get your fill of doughy goodness. We’re fans of Wilsthire Pantry’s sourdough loaves, the traditional French Levain at Blue Dog Bakery & Cafe, and the Oaxacan-inspired Pan de Masa Madre at La Pana Bakery y Cafe.

Pro tip: If you’re picking up some tasty treats at any of Louisville’s bakeries, from our experience, the apron-laden are typically willing to offer some friendly advice for beginner bakers eager to learn more.
