Spring festivals in Louisville, KY

Bloom, baby bloom.

It wouldn’t almost be spring in Derby City if there wasn’t at least one last threat of snow. While a minor snowfall is projected for this weekend, we’re setting our sights beyond the forecast on these six springtime festivals that go beyond the Kentucky Derby.

Mark your calendars. The first day of spring is March 20 and through its final day on June 21, there’s a lot to do from a garden show in Paristown to a traditional German celebration ushering in spring.

March

Burgoo Bash Cook-off | March 19

Welcome to the first festival dedicated to the strangest stew this side of Mississippi. Both professionals + amateurs can enter this Burgoo cook-off to claim bragging rights for the best cup of “goo.” Those not putting on a chef hat can attend to taste and vote for $10.

NULU Bock Fest | March 26

Bock beer is the unofficial beer of spring. This low-hop style of lager comes in many varieties from Maibock to Doppelbock, and for the fifth time, the NuLu association is making sure you get a taste at its fest with goat racing, local vendors, live music + Kentucky Proud sausages.

April

Paristown Garden Show | April 16

Thaw out your green thumb at this garden show featuring plants, flowers, garden decor, local speakers + a wine garden presented by Fleur de Flea. Interested in showcasing your blossoms? Check out vendor information here.

May

Maifest Biergarten | May 14

Think Oktoberfest, but in May. In Germany, Maifest is a celebration of the arrival of spring + includes a decorated maibaum or maypole. Get a taste of this tradition at German American Club with German beers and dinner.

Old Louisville Springfest | May 21

It will be the 10th year for this Old Louisville neighborhood event + this year Turners Circus will be there with aerial artists and acrobats. Shop handmade goods from local artisans + food from Louisville food trucks.

June

Ali Festival | June 3-9

Muhammad Ali died on June 3, 2016 + this week-long festival celebrating “The Greatest” pays tribute to his legacy. Details are forthcoming, but you can sign-up for this newsletter to stay in the loop.
