A Downtown building that used to house a military surplus store could be the site of your next staycation.

The old G&K Shoe Company Wholesale Footwear & Government Surplus building near Whiskey Row is now home to the Hollyhock Suites on Main — a short-term rental property with seven suites across three floors, including the basement. For context, it’s the black-and-white building at 639 W. Main St.

The army surplus shop operated in that location for about 80 years until 2015. It’s sat vacant since, until local couple Benjamin and Amanda Brainard purchased the property for $600,000 in March 2020. After a year and a half of renovating, the Hollyhock Suites on Main opened to the public in November 2021.

The circa-1875 building’s new suites can accommodate anywhere from eight to 14 people, with rental rates ranging from $300-$700 per night during the week.

All of the Hollyhock Suites on Main Street include a kitchen, washing machine, wireless internet + are suitable for children. They also allow for pets.
