Founded in 2022, Period, Y’all is a nonprofit dedicated to eliminating period poverty — that is, an inqeuality in access to menstrual products — around Kentucky.

I had a chance to chat with Period, Y’all founder Skylar Davis about what the organization does and what you can do to help.

Period, Y’all started as a table of supplies at a Louisville food shelf. Davis noticed how popular these items were, and decided she wanted to help. Now, Period, Y’all has three main initiatives.

“It’s so needed, and there’s not a lot of people doing this work,” she said.

And needed it is. Here’s a quick look at Period, Y’all’s impact by the numbers.

  • 44,000 period products distributed last year
  • Four period pantriesthink Little Free Libraries for menstrual products — in operation, with 11 more requests underway
  • 100 schools served across 34 counties, mostly in Eastern Kentucky, as part of the Stock the Schools program

Period, Y’all is also working on distributing menstrual products to local music festivals as part of the Periods Are Metal AF program

If you’d like to help contribute to Period, Y’all’s mission, Davis said there are a few ways to do so. Monthly donors help keep the organization running long term, but one-time donations are also always welcome. If your organization wants to host a volunteer event packing supplies, run a donation drive, or set up a period pantry, you can contact Davis online. Finally, if you happen to have an old magazine or newspaper kiosk kicking around, consider donating it — they make perfect period pantries.

Period, Y’all is also planning a fundraiser concert on Aug. 22 at Portal — stay tuned for more info.
