Blast from the past: take and share films with Louisville’s Free Blockbuster community

You may have heard of Little Free Libraries, but this international movement is working to bring free films to people in its path.

A blue-and-yellow stand with Blockbuster branding is pictured in a yard. The stand has two sections, with one labeled "Adults" and one labeled "Kids." Inside each section are rows of DVDs.

The Free Blockbuster stand in Crescent Hill has a section for adult and kids films.

Ever find yourself longing for a Friday night trip to pick up new-to-you VHS tapes and candy at the Blockbuster down the street? Us, too. While it can’t bring back the iconic smell of stepping inside a store, a movement called Free Blockbuster might just scratch that film rental itch.

Similar to Little Free Libraries, Free Blockbuster locations provide a space to leave and borrow DVDs and VHS tapes, often in old newspaper stands.

A quick history

Be kind, rewind — all the way back to 2018, when a former Blockbuster employee in California thought of a way to revitalize old LA Times newspaper dispensers. The very first Free Blockbuster appeared in early 2019, and the movement has spread across the world since then.

Find them in Louisville

There are two known locations in Derby City, according to Free Blockbuster’s franchise map, but you can also use the map to explore Free Blockbusters everywhere — from Lexington, KY to the UK.
