Louisville’s kids are back in schoolbut why should they have all the fun? Derby City is full of opportunities for life-long learners to pick up new skills, explore a new hobby, or improve on what they already know.

We’ve rounded up a list of classes to fill your schedule this semester. Think of us as your LOU guidance counselor.

Art

Whet Your Palette

This Anchorage studio offers drop-in painting sessions with weekly specials, including half-off canvases on Tuesdays and BOGO large canvases 6-8 p.m. on Thursdays. If you prefer a bit more guidance — and some refreshments — consider the Paint + Sip classes.

Preston Arts Center

If you’re interested in taking your art to the next level, consider a multi-session class in oils, watercolors, or acrylics. You can also drop by for single-session workshops like Bob Ross animal painting, clay gnomes, and stained glass.

English

A Novel Romance

This romance bookstore hosts multiple book clubs each week where you can meet and discuss with likeminded readers — and maybe finally crack the secret of why the curtains were blue.

Home economics

Cooking at Millie’s
You’ll want to plan ahead for one of these date night cooking classes — they sell out fast. If you can land a spot, you’ll learn to make macarons, explore Japanese cuisine, or produce pasta from scratch.

Cooking at the Cottage
From baking to kitchen basics to international cuisines, there’s something for everyone at Kentucky’s only independent culinary retail store. Plus, two glasses of wine are included in the price for most classes.

Liquor Lab
Level up your home bartending skills with cocktail classes paired with small bites.

P.E.

Louisville Parks and Rec
Your local community center probably offers yoga, zumba, weight training, or sports leagues. These classes are often free of charge, and some community centers have open-play hours so you can practice at your own pace.

Hot Mess Sports
This LGBTQ+ league has volleyball, tennis, dodgeball, kickball, and even cornhole teams throughout the year. Sign up as a team or join alone as a free agent.

Bonus: Check out our guides to LOU’s gyms and yoga classes and find the one that works for you.

Theater

Actors Theatre
Louisville’s major theater offers classes for kids and adults, including the 4-week Scene Study class where you can meet with other local artists, delve into a scene, and get constructive feedback.
