Here’s the vision to rebuild Louisville’s Broadway

The Broadway Master Plan has a new name: Broadway All The Way. The project’s goal is to transform the 192-year-old roadway from Southwestern Parkway in Shawnee all the way to Baxter Avenue in the Highlands. That’s 10 miles.

In September, the project, which initially launched in 2022, got an injection of life with a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation through its RAISE Planning Grant program.

With those funds as backing, Broadway All The Way is considering some major changes, prioritizing safety, access, and equity for everyone, including pedestrians, cyclists, public transportation users, and drivers. Potential changes include:

  • Bus lanes, to increase the dependability + regularity of TARC routes
  • Bike lanes, to allow cyclists access to roadway
  • Traffic calming measures like medians + planted shrubs, to discourage speeding

In its grant proposal, Broadway All They Way officials said they hope that a plan could be complete by August 2025.

The project is currently seeking public input before laying out a detailed plan, and they’re not shy about asking for it.

Broadway All The Way is hosting several community events over the next few weeks, including a TARC Stop Pop-Up at Broadway’s intersection with 9th Street at from 3 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

If you miss that stop, pencil in these upcoming November events:

  • Meet with officials at the Douglass Loop + Bardstown Road Farmer’s Market on Saturday, Nov. 9 + Saturday, Nov. 16
  • Have Breakfast on Broadway with officials on Tuesday, Nov. 12, Monday, Nov. 18, and Thursday, Nov. 21
  • Drop in on another TARC stop pop-up on Monday, Nov. 11 at Bardstown Road + Goldsmith Lane
  • Officials will be celebrating the holidays at Fete de Noel — and you can give them the gift of feedback — on Sunday, Nov. 24
