A new wine bar and bottleshop has taken flight in the Shelby Park neighborhood at 1247 S. Shelby St.

The Canary Club + The Breeze Wine Shop & Coffee Bar are both housed in the former Monkey Drive building across from Toasty’s Tavern and together are the sister concept to The Breeze retail bar, which has locations in Louisville and Lexington.

Owned by Chelsea Monsma and Sarah Height, the new bar and store represent a lot of firsts for our city — including being Louisville’s first and only natural wine bar and first and only coffee bar and wine shop.

We dropped by during opening day on Monday. Here’s what you need to know:

The bar

Exposed brick, mood lighting + fresh fruit and flower table pieces set the scene for the European-style bar boasting six categories of wine — white, red, sparkling, orange, rose, and crushable red — by the glass or bottle.

And for the non-winos, the bar is serving cocktails, signature shots, beer, cider, sake, and a robust non-alcoholic selection — we recommend the Ghia aperitivo spritz.

Canary Club has European vibes in a neighborhood setting.

The Canary Club bar is open Mon.-Fri., 4 p.m.-2 a.m. and Sat.-Sun., 12 p.m.-2 a.m. Check out its weekly features including happy hour, karaoke Fridays, and Monday industry night.

Pro tip: The bottleshop and bar are connected so that you can move back and forth between the two.

Eats

The Spanish-style tapas menu (available daily until 1:30 a.m.) features dishes like chimichurri peanuts, charcuterie cones, patatas bravas, and high-end tinned fish — which is the latest foodie trend, thanks Tik Tok. We tried the Fishwife Smoked Salmon Chili Crisp served with baguette, pickled red onions + mustard on a fish-shaped plate. If the bottleshop hadn’t closed at 9 p.m., we would’ve bought at least 10 more to bring home. It was that good.

Seriously, do yourself a favor and explore the tinned fish options.
