Louisville’s newest historic preservation district

Louisville has a lots of history worth looking into, and we do that from time to time here at LOUtoday — should we call it LOUyesterday?

The Louisville Metro Historic Preservation and Urban Design Team works within the Office of Planning to preserve that history.

Louisville is home to seven historic preservation districts — and an eighth is about to join that list.

Louisville Metro Council approved the designation of the Chickasaw neighborhood last week. The neighborhood will be adopting temporary guidelines modeled after Clifton’s as it assembles a committee of its own.

Each district has a design review process for all exterior alterations, demolition, and new construction.

The Historic Landmarks and Preservation Districts Commission — which you can join, by the way — regularly holds public meetings, so keep your eye on the Louisville Metro Council schedule.

Louisville Water began in 1860 with a mission to provide clean, reliable water + support fire protection.

Visionaries Theodore Scowden and Charles Hermany launched the city’s “quest for pure water,” laying a foundation that George Warren Fuller would later build on through landmark filtration experiments.

Their work sparked innovations that shape the organization’s work today, from riverbank filtration to lead line removal and award-winning treatment.

Now, Louisville Water delivers 131 million gallons daily to nearly a million people, all while leading the industry in science and innovation.
