After years of delayed deadlines, it’s finally getting real — the official deadline to obtain a REAL ID is coming up on May 7, 2025.

Why do I need one?

You’ll need a REAL ID — or another federally-approved form of identification, such as a passport — if you plan to fly domestically or enter secure federal or military facilities starting May 7. If you don’t have one by that time, you’ll still be able to do things like vote and drive with a standard state license.

How can I get one?

Walk-ins are accepted in a limited capacity, but we recommend making an appointment online for any regional office. The following offices are located in Louisville:

  • Bowman Field, 3501 Roger E. Schupp St.
  • Dixie Highway, 6202 Willismore Dr.
  • Hurstbourne, 9112 Leesgate Rd.
  • Nia Center, 2900 W. Broadway, Ste. 100

Bringing the correct forms of identification is important — and will save you a return trip by getting it right the first time. Take this quiz + you’ll receive a list of exactly what you need.

Pricing for the REAL ID starts at $14 and goes up to $58.
