The most famous egg salad sandwich in Kentucky

Maybe even the world.

The egg salad sandwich is made with local eggs, smoked Duke’s Mayo, yolk jam, and chives.

Kentucky is famous for a lot of things: bourbon, Bluegrass music, and college basketball. But the latest rising star is a $10 egg salad sandwich at The Bar at Willett in Bardstown.

The roots of the humble American sandwich date back to the 19th century and follow a similar timeline with the Nelson County distillery where the famous egg salad sandwich was born.

You might be thinking, “What makes this egg salad so good it’s worth a 50-minute drive?”
Well, we’ll let the 55 Yelp reviews dedicated to it do the talking. Here are just a few things people have said:

  • “This egg salad sandwich was the best sandwich I’ve ever had in my life.”
  • “The FAMOUS and most life-changing egg salad sandwich peeking through here. GET IT!!!”
  • “PLEASE, PLEASE get the egg salad. You will thank me later...DAYUM!”

And if you’re still not convinced, it even has its own Instagram page for its 1,300+ loyal following.

The Bar at Willett opened in 2019 and the lauded egg salad sandwich has been a staple menu item since day one. It’s made using local eggs in three different ways: cured, hard boiled, and jammed. Duke’s Mayo plays a tangy role in the recipe + it’s lightly smoked with apple wood. Mix it all together and slather it between two toasted brioche slices and you have the makings of a star.

Open hours are Wednesday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., which means you could definitely take a long lunch break if you tried hard enough. Be sure to make a reservation before taking the trip though — they’re required.
