From porch to pig pen: How your old pumpkins can feed happy hogs

Instead of just throwing your pumpkins away in the garbage, consider donating them to local farms through Pumpkins For Pigs.

Not sure how to deal with pumpkin disposal this year? We’ve got the perfect recommendation for you. And the answer is a lot cuter than you might think.

Meet Pumpkins For Pigs, a Virginia-based organization founded to reroute leftover pumpkins and other items to farms, sanctuaries, and rescues for feed or compost. What began with 10 local partners has grown into 600+ drop-off sites across the US and Canada.

How you can donate

There are a few locations around the Bluegrass region, including Saylor Family Farm in Louisville. Make sure to check out each farm’s drop-off instructions, as they differ.

Other pumpkin donation options

There are a few other options for your unused gourds around town.

  • Butterfly Valley Rescue | Donate your uncarved, unpainted pumpkins to this local animal rescue. Text 502-791-5865 to receive a drop-off address.
  • Tribe Animal Sanctuary | Now through Friday, Nov. 11, Tribe is accepting uncarved and unpainted pumpkins for its animals.
  • Cook with pumpkins | Pigs aren’t the only animals that enjoy a pumpkin snack. Every part of the pumpkin is edible to humans, too.

Benefits of donating

According to Pumpkins for Pigs, there are many benefits besides providing food for livestock. Here are just a few:

  • Reduces costs for local farms, sanctuaries, and animal rescues by providing free compost material.
  • Decreases landfill waste, helping extend the lifespan of existing landfills and lessen environmental impact.
  • Strengthens community connections by engaging residents in sustainable, farm-supporting initiatives.

Register your own farm

Looking to accept donations at your farm, sanctuary, or rescue? Complete this registration form to get approved by the organization. Once approved, you’ll need to order lawn signs, and then you’re set to accept donations.
