History worth preserving

Louisville has lots of history worth looking into, and we do that from time to time here at LOUtoday — should we call it LOUyesterday?

From cobblestone streets to — well — all of Louisville’s streets and Victorian mansions to lost Civil War forts, the history of Derby City is all around us.

The Louisville Metro Historic Preservation and Urban Design Team works within the Office of Planning to preserve that history. Here’s the skinny on what that team does + how you can get involved.

Historic Preservation

Did you know: Louisville is home to seven historic preservation districts?
  • Butchertown
  • Cherokee Triangle
  • Clifton
  • Limerick
  • Old Louisville
  • Parkland
  • West Main Street
The Historic Preservation and Urban Design team staffs the Historic Landmarks and Preservation Districts Commission, which oversees these districts.

Each district has a design review process for all exterior alterations, demolition, and new construction — so if you wanna build in one of these neighorhoods, you gotta go through the process first.

The Louisville Gardens is a Beaux Arts style building with columns and three stories. Its mezzanine is a bit run down as the title "The Gardens" across the front is missing the "ar" in "Gardens."

The Louisville Gardens is one of the ~100 designated individual landmarks in Louisville.

Landmarks

Thanks to its rich history, Louisville is also city of landmarks. The Historic Preservation and Urban Design Team also oversees the review process for those landmarks. There are ~100 individual landmarks spread throughout the city, and 10+ that are under consideration.

These landmarks include distinctive architectural features or historical associations that represent the historic character of Louisville + Kentucky or the US.

How you can get involved

The Historic Landmarks and Preservation Districts Commission — which you can join, by the wayregularly holds public meetings, so keep your eye on the Louisville Metro Council schedule.

The Commission has also released new Standard Design Guidelines, and is holding educational meetings through this month where you can learn more.

Let HANDS support you through your pregnancy and your child’s early years. | Photo provided by Bullitt County HANDS
Did you know? National Parents’ Day is this Sunday, July 28.

Becoming a parent can be stressful — fortunately for Bullitt County residents, there’s a resource available for you and your new bundle of joy. Enter: The HANDS program.

What’s the goal?

HANDS is a free, voluntary, once-weekly home visitation program for new (and expectant) parents.

The process begins with a designated HANDS visitor discussing topics like pregnancy, developmental milestones, and home safety with you — from the comfort of your living room.

Families then receive tailored resources and home visitation to help support:
  • Healthy pregnancies and birth
  • Healthy child growth and development
  • Safe, healthy homes
  • Self-sufficient families
Pro tip: Follow along on Instagram for helpful hints (think: sun safety + seasonal activities).

Who can join?

Not a new parent quite yet? Enrollment is available during pregnancy or before your child turns three months old.

Consider this a friendly reminder to plan ahead — and thank us later.

The old fashioned might be the official cocktail of Louisville, but did you know that there’s a cocktail called The Louisville?

It’s true. The creation was crafted by SC Baker — a bartender at Expo (114 W. Main St.) — in 2022 as part of a competition at Bourbon and Beyond. The cocktail is, of course, still bourbon-based, but it has a much brighter and more refreshing taste than your typical old fashioned.

    Here’s the recipe:
    • 1.5 parts bourbon
    • .5 part Amaro
    • .75 parts dry Curacao
    • .75 parts lime juice
    • .25 part cinnamon syrup
Want to try it, but not sure of your bartending skills? The Louisville is currently on the menu at Epiphany (1525 Highland Ave.) and Bar Genevieve (730 E. Market St.).
