Flash back to September

Our most read stories in September

Our No. 1 September story was about the Speed family’s Cold Spring Estate in the Highlands. | Photo by Kentucky Select Properties
If you’ve been asleep like Green Day, consider this waking you up when September ends.

The last month has been packed — from the Netflix docuseries release about Ohio Valley Wrestling to the first UofL football game of the season. Here are the three stories you all read the most, which garnered over 17K views combined.

Speed family estate in the Highlands is up for sale
This historic 6.71-acre property near Cherokee Park hit the market earlier this year for $5.25 million. The price dropped in September, but not by much, to $4.995 million. The Cold Spring Estate was built in 1867 by members of the Speed family. It includes a four-bedroom home with a solarium, a carriage house, and mature gardens.

City Editor Katie came face to face with the Pope Lick Monster this month.

Strange fall festivals you’ve probably never been to
We love the fall classics that happen in Louisville every year like the St. James Art Fair and Jack O’Lantern Spectacular, but we rounded-up some lesser known fests to keep things interesting. Goatman, and bats, and wooly worms, oh my!

Historic Gaffney turned into a luxury rental property
In July we found out that the long-vacant Gaffney House on River Road was being restored. After the renovation was complete, we got a tour of the property to see its new life as a short-term rental.

When was the last time you took a moment for yourself? If you’re like us, then it’s been a while. Luckily, Lalai Day Spa is here to help Louisvillians slow down and invest in their wellness — especially before the busy holiday season.

Lalai (pronounced la-lie; means to melt) opened in 2022, and boasts the only Thai massage therapist owner from Thailand in our whole state. Their skillful staff of six has a combined experience of almost 100 years (read: they know what they’re doing). As an active member of Respect Massage, Lalai ensures each massage experience is safe and respectful for both the staff and client.

Lalai’s services include:
  • Customized massage
  • Relaxation Swedish massage (ft. hot stones, deep tissue, and manual lymphatic drainage)
  • Traditional Thai massage (AKA when therapists walk on you, and you might hear the sounds of tight air gaps releasing between vertebrae)
  • Signature Lalai Facial
  • And more
Each session is curated for individual needs whether for therapeutic massage or glow skincare. Fun fact: You’re guaranteed to feel lighter and rejuvenated after your first session, which practitioners often refer to as “massage drunk” or “massage hungover” — but it’s a good thing. Beware of your first “Massage Drunk” or “Massage Hangover” after your session.

Pro tip: Massages make a great gift for yourself or a loved one.

Ponyboy Slings is officially slinging its ready-to-drink bourbon cocktails in a can. The Louisville-founded beverage company held its official launch party last Thursday at Galaxie. The 1970s-themed evening included food pairings with its three flavors and the unveiling of the Pony Wagon, a shag-carpeted 1977 Chevy van.

Try a Ponyboy at any of these locations around town.
