JCPS receives $20 million gift from philanthropist Mackenzie Scott

Jefferson County Public Schools received its largest gift from a single donor in district history — and it’s from billionaire philanthropist Mackenzie Scott.
Her $20 million gift will be used to help improve 11 West Louisville schools by funding playgrounds, athletic fields, uniforms, music rooms, college trips + more as part of a new district initiative looking to narrow the gap in supplemental funding for high-poverty schools.
The initiative, called “E3: Engagement, Environment and Experiences,” looks to fight inequity in project funding so students, parents + communities across the district can all enjoy the same enrichment opportunities.
The money will go into the Jefferson County Public Education Foundation — which provides financial support for the district — and from there, the district will begin the process of divvying up the funds.
The billionaire philanthropist isn’t the only one taking an interest in West Louisville, particularly its schools. Here are a few more educational happenings in West LOU:

The Germantown Gables, a new luxury event space, is reaching completion at 986 Swan St. in an industrial warehouse that was going to become The Greenhaus. Though it’s expected to be open to the public by January 2023, Germantown Gables will host a Fleur de Flea fashion show on Sat., Nov. 5. (WLKY)

The Abraham Lincoln statue outside of the Main Library at 301 York St. celebrated its 100th birthday on Wednesday. George Grey Barnard of Madison, IN sculpted the bronze statue using Louisvillian Charles Abraham Thomas as the figure model — who was also born in a log cabin + split lumber just like Honest Abe.
Maddox & Rose Marketplace in NuLu will be hosting an event with Ray’s Aura Portraits on Wed., Nov. 9 that will include a custom candle-making experience. Tickets are $65 and include an aura portrait, a guided meditation + candle supplies. The two-hour event will be centered around the theme of gratitude. 🕯️

In more money news, UPS is investing $334 million into its local operations — which will create 435 jobs for Kentuckians.
As the largest employer in Louisville with 25,000+ employees, let’s get into the nuts and bolts of the investment and its impact on the commonwealth:
In Derby City, the logistics provider will invest $155 million + create the bulk of the new positions — 315 jobs total.
UPS’ Louisville plans include a new, one million-sqft facility, though the location is currently undetermined.
The remaining $178 million will go toward another new, one million-sqft facilityin Bullitt County, which will create 120 jobs — the location of which is also currently undetermined.
With UPS Worldport, its 21 supply chain solution warehouses, and eight million sqft of warehouse space, the company’s economic impact on Kentucky accounts for $2.5 billion in annual payroll + 62,000 direct and indirect jobs.
