Common puffballs release spores in a smoke-like cloud.

The common puffball fungus (Lycoperdon perlatum) goes by many different names — devil’s snuff box, wolf farts, and warted puffball are just a few.

These odd little creatures were found by The Parklands of Floyds Fork off of the Coppiced Woods Trail in Beckley Creek Park .

As you can see, the mushrooms release spores in smoke-like cloud when they’re touched by raindrops or in this case, a stick.

Keep an eye out for more spooky fungi this fall — like this Bleeding Tooth Fungus spotted last year.
