Louisville’s newest landmark is about to ‘SPARK’

A new art installation at Louisville Visual Art is set to be lit this weekend.

“SPARK” was funded through a $250,000 grant by the Rounsavall Foundation.

The Louisville Visual Art (LVA) building in Portland is home to a new, 40-ft-tall sculpture by the Seattle-based design firm Haddad|Drugan. “SPARK” features a series of bright metal panels + clear glass tubes, which will light up the night.

It also features painted elements on the wall behind it, which were done by the regional mural collective Often Seen, Rarely Spoken — you’ve probably seen their work around town.

“SPARK” stands for Student + Professional Art Resources + Knowledge, a neat summation of LVA’s mission and programming — which includes summer camps, drawing classes, and artist talks.

The new sculpture was manufactured down the street at Rockerbuilt, which designs and builds custom products from metal, glass, wood + more.

You can see the new sculpture make its debut this Thursday, Feb. 13 at 6:30 p.m. Members of state + local government will be present, and the SPARK will be lit after sunset.
