This week, members of the Kentucky National Guard, The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District, and multiple independent volunteer organizations are in North Carolina + Florida to help in the Hurricane Helene relief efforts.
If you’d like to help our Appalachian neighbors from here in Derby City, there are a number of ways you can donate resources or support impacted people directly.
Artist Maria Andrade Troya
An Asheville, NC-based ceramics artist is coming to the St. James Court Art Show this weekend after her studio was flooded during the storm. You can find Troya in the 1300 Association Section on Magnolia Avenue, near Third Street. You can also donate to a GoFundMe supporting all the artists who lost studio space + work in the same building.
Hi-Wire Brewing
This brewery has a Highlands taproom, but is based out of Asheville, NC. The Hi-Wire headquarters, distribution center, and River District Arts taproom were all submerged and are “likely a total loss.” A second location sustained heavy flood damage, as well. Thankfully, all Asheville-based employees are safe. Louisvillians can visit the Baxter Avenue taproom, or donate directly to help out.
National efforts
Here are more ways to help those affected by the storm:
- You can donate money to help pay for supplies to the American Red Cross — give $10 by texting HELENE to 90999. There is also a critical need for blood donations.
- The United Way has created a special Helene Recovery donation page.
- The Salvation Army is providing up to 1,500 meals a day to victims of the Hurricane. Donate to the Relief Fund.
- GoFundMe has created a direct Hurricane Relief Fund to allow users to donate without worrying about scams on the site.
- Local organizations like the Asheville Survival Program and BeLoved Asheville are taking donations for boots-on-the-ground relief.
