Mid City Mall went on the market in 2024 after over 60 years in business. Now, the long-time owners are working with Georgia-based Branch Properties to redevelop the site with a focus on “neighborhood needs, public space and compatibility with the surrounding community.”
The architecture is designed to echo the surrounding Highlands neighborhood, with small nods to buildings from up and down Bardstown Road.
Branch Properties is planning to hold more community engagement meetings as the project develops. The next will be tomorrow, Jan. 28 at Gilda’s Club on Grinstead Drive at 8:30 a.m.
You can also follow along with the project on Facebook.

Looking back at The Back Door
The mural of Louisvillians is an iconic part of The Back Door. | Photo by ATG Brewery
It’s been almost two years since The Back Door announced its closure, the first of a run of closings leading up to Mid City Mall’s sale.
Perhaps the most iconic part of the bar was its mural-covered walls. Even if The Back Door was empty — which was rarely true when it was open — the place looked full, the walls filled with the faces of loyal customers.
The tradition started in 2007, when Back Door regular Bill Page — a painter — filled one wall with a group of familiar faces, including his own. Since then, Page painted over 1,000 faces, filling almost every wall.
Many of the portraits were saved and wound up for sale at Mellwood Antiques — last time your friendly local editor checked, there were still some left.

Well Louisville, the storm has come and gone and we’re left with a good amount of snow as a memento. I don’t know about you, but I looked pretty much just like this all weekend as I watched the flakes fall. Stay warm, LOU.
The Louisville Zoo’s gorillas are having a snow day just like we are.
