Choo choo — do you hear that? It’s the sound of Derby City passenger rail news coming down the tracks.
In case you missed it, Louisville was one of 37 locations identified as potential stops on a new Amtrak route, according to a newly released study from the US Department of Transportation Federal Railroad Administration.
In 2021, Congress commissioned the Long-Distance Service Study to evaluate potential restoration of daily intercity rail passenger service on routes that had been historically discontinued or weren’t offered daily.
The study found Louisville could be a stop on a “preferred route option.” The Floridian line would run from Miami to Chicago, covering 1,500+ miles in ~36 hours. It would include stops in Indianapolis, Atlanta, and Orlando, among others.
Louisville was also on a potential route between Detroit and New Orleans, but the study did not mention a stop in Derby City.
