What these local soccer stars love about Derby City

While you might know them for scoring goals and dominating the field at Lynn Family Stadium, Racing Louisville FC players can also be found exploring our city.

We caught up with a few of them — and Coach Bev Yanez — to chat about their favorite local spots and how they spend their time outside of soccer. Here’s what they had to say:

Goalkeeper Olivia Sekany

  • Outside of playing soccer, my favorite thing to do is: “Go to yoga at YogaSix. It’s a great community of people and it always feels so inviting when we go there. And they’re big Racing supporters.”
  • I love that Louisville: “is such a historic city with so many cool landmarks and buildings to go explore.”
  • My favorite local spot is: “Volare. The food is delicious, and the atmosphere is great. It’s time away from being sweaty, dirty soccer players to get dressed up and go out.”

Coach Bev Yanez

  • Outside of playing soccer, my favorite thing to do is: “Spend time with my family — we have two daughters — at Malibu Jack’s.”
  • I love that Louisville: “has good coffee. I couldn’t survive without it. I’m a regular at both Heine Brothers and Quills.”
  • My favorite local spot is: “Jade Palace. It’s so, so good. The egg drop soup is unreal.”

Forward Parker Goins

  • Outside of playing soccer, my favorite thing to do is: “take my dog Ronny on a walk. A lot of the girls on the team have dogs and we love walking along the river.”
  • I love that Louisville: “always has something to do, whether it’s the Derby, Bourbon and Beyond, sports events, something at the Waterfront.”
  • My favorite local spot is: “La Bodeguita. I really love their Cubano nachos.”
Catch Racing as they take on Portland Thorns FC on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m.

“Triple Take” — a Louisville Ballet production featuring three one-of-a-kind world premiere ballets blending classical and contemporary music + dance — is set to take the stage at The Brown Theatre Nov. 1-3.

This mix of brand-new works is perfect for someone who wants an introduction to ballet as each piece in the three-act show is unique. Here’s what to expect:
  • Part 1: Broken Totem | Choreography by Louisville Ballet Resident Choreographer Adam Hougland + music by Igor Stravinsky | Hougland has been a resident choreographer with the ballet for 20 years, choreographing many contemporary works for the company.
  • Part 2: Influences | Choreography by Louisville Ballet Artistic Director Harald Uwe Kern + music by Robert Schumann | This will be Kern’s first new piece as LB’s Artistic Director.
  • Part 3: 502 | Choreography by Ching Ching Wong + music by Jack Harlow | Wong’s work is known for playfully blending ballet, contemporary, jazz + modern styles.
Tickets start as low as $35. Bonus: Save up to 20% when you combine “Triple Take” with one or more additional productions this season.

Eat
  • And they’re off... the menu. Matt Winn’s Steakhouse at Churchill Downs is no longer operating as a standalone restaurant, and will now serve as a dining offering on premium live race dates — think: Derby Day + Oaks Day. Named after a former Churchill Downs president, the restaurant opened in 2020. (WHAS11)

Kids
  • You know what they say: Whoever smelt it, dealt built it. The “Who Forted?!” exhibit at the Kentucky Science Center is undergoing a renovation. The new features will include a dig pit, slide, and mural for young builders to learn from + explore. It’ll re-open later this fall.
Number
  • $2.5 billion. That’s how much the state of Kentucky estimates was wagered in its first year of legal sports betting. The practice became lawful following the passage of House Bill 551 on Sept. 7, 2023.
Sports
  • Running back Isaac Brown led the Louisville football team to a 24-20 victory over Virginia with 146 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. How did the freshman do it? What do you call a dish with turkey, bacon, and tomatoes, served on white bread, all covered in cheesy Mornay sauce? A Hot Brown, of course.

The third annual Louisville Hot Brown Week is coming up Monday, Oct. 21 through Sunday Oct. 27, celebrating Louisville’s signature culinary icon.

We’ve got the info you need to enjoy the iconic, open-faced sandwich.
    • Read up on the history of the Hot Brownso you know what you’ll be digging into.
    • This year, 13 restaurants are taking part, including Four Pegs in Germantown, Rubbie’s in the Kenwood area, and The Cafe in Paristown Pointe. Take a bite out of the full list.
    • Download the app to keep track of your progress. If you check-in at four or more participating restaurants, you’ll get the chance to win $250 in gift cards — that’s a lot of Hot Browns.

While Hot Brown Week may still be a few days away, we’ve also got something to celebrate this week. Bourbon distillery Elijah Craig is hosting Old Fashioned Week across the country, including over 100 bars in Derby City.

Come to think of it, washing a Hot Brown down with an old fashioned might be the most Louisville thing possible.
