Take a road trip to the Historic Tapoco Lodge Resort

LOUtoday_Tapoco Lodge
The Tapoco Lodge was built in 1930 by the Tallassee Power Company to house workers near the Cheoah dams and other hydroelectric power projects in the area. | Photo by LOUtoday
Itching to get out of town this winter, Louisvillians? Skip those pesky airport security lines and jump in your car for a road trip to the Historic Tapoco Lodge in Robbinsville, NC — part of the Great Smoky Mountains’ foothills — instead.

Essential info

Drive time: ~5 hours
Year the lodge was established: 1930
Open: Year-round

Experience

You can’t miss the Tail of the Dragon Statue along Tapoco Road on the way to the lodge.

Tail of the Dragon
Formally known as US Route 129, this 11-mile span of road has 318 curves, making it one of the US’ top motorcycle + sport car destinations. Plus, it conveniently leads directly to the Tapoco Lodge.

Hiking
There are 10+ trails on the property and surrounding Nantahala National Forest that range from short 1.5-mile loops to more extensive 7-mile hikes.

Wehrloom Honey, 257 Willie Colvin Rd.
Located 20 minutes off property, this local honey shop has a mead taproom, honey tastings, bee observatory, and gift shop.

Eat

Grab a bite to eat in the Tapoco Tavern.

Tapoco Tavern
Located on the bottom level of the lodge, the tavern is open seasonally serving wood-fired pizzas and pub-style food.

The Laurel Lounge
This cozy bar is open until 10 p.m. every night inside the lodge and slings specialty cocktails, beer, and wine. We recommend the old fashioned served with a smoky ice cube.

Stay

Lodge rooms
There are six rooms and three suites inside the lodge. The rooms stay true to their historic nature by featuring original design elements + don’t include TVs and utilize old-school door keys — no keycards here. Daily housekeeping is included.

Cabins
Outside of lodge rooms, Tapoco has seven cabins available to book. Each one includes daily housekeeping, a firepit, porches, and 24-hour guest services.

Wait a minute, Louisvillians. Before you head out the door, find the cheapest places to fill up your gas tank + stock up on road trip snacks from ValuMarket.

Earlybird Bagel Shop rolling into Schnitzelburg

LOUtoday_Earlybird Bagel Company
The local bagel company has been operating as a pop-up in LOU since 2022. | Photo by @schnitzelburg_sacc
Local small-batch bagel company Earlybird Bagel Shop is opening a brick-and-mortar retail store in a shared space with Six Forks Burger Company at 1039 Ash St. The bakery has been rolling out bagels since 2022 via pop-ups and online orders, but soon you’ll be able to get its bold-flavored bagels and schmears in-person.

The bakery got the keys to the new digs back in November, and thanks to a $50,000 Midi Loan from Metro’s METCO program, Earlybird was able to purchase equipment + build out the new storefront.

Here’s a taste of what’s to come:
  • Hand-rolled bagels — plain, cacio e pepe, za’atar and sea salt, French toast, sesame
  • Bialys (the bagel’s lesser-known cousin) — onion-poppyseed, brie and hot honey
  • Original schmears — Bloody Mary, smoked salmon dill, ube blueberry
  • Sandwiches + more
  • And possibly, bagel holes?
Check out four other Derby City bagel shops.

From the editor
Yesterday, was the best day of the whole year so far. I got to see my favorite (former) wrestler Mick Foley — aka Mankind, Dude Love, Cactus Jack — at Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) during the weekly live TV broadcast match at Davis Arena.

Listen to Foley’s thoughts on the Netflix docuseries “Wrestlers” about OVW that released last fall.
