Angel’s Envy planning downtown Louisville expansion

Angel’s Envy has purchased a roughly two acre parking lot in downtown Louisville, adjacent to its current facility at the corner of Main and Jackson Streets.

The distillery says it’s eyeing the property for expansion, which will reportedly occupy two stories of space, taking up most of the newly purchased land, and include:
  • A skyway over Jackson Street, connecting the new building to the existing distillery
  • A space for Angel Envy’s master distiller Owen Martin to create and test new products
  • Storage for dry goods + more space for tours
Additionally, Angel’s Envy plans to expand its whiskey operations in Henry County, KY, adding more rickhouses + a new distillery and bottling facility on its 350-acre property.

This round of expansion follows several recent projects for the distillery, which added 13,000 sqft of space in 2022. The $8.2 million project included a new bar, a lager retail store, five tasting rooms, and an area dedicated to the “Bottle Your Own” experience.

News Notes
Open
  • Derby City Gaming Downtown opens today. The 43,000-sqft complex, at 4th and Market Streets, features ~500 historic horse racing machines (which work just like slot machines), a sports book + three restaurant and bar spaces. It’s open from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday-Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 4 a.m. Friday-Saturday.
Traffic
  • Starting Friday, Dec. 8, the eastbound lanes of the Sherman Minton Bridge will shut down for 11 days. The closure will allow crews to demolish the upper deck as part of the bridge’s renewal project. Eastbound traffic will reopen on Wednesday, Dec. 20. Meanwhile, drivers should use I-265 to I-65 instead. (WDRB)
Health
  • $6.5 million. That’s how much money the University of Louisville’s School of Nursing is set to receive from a federal grant. The funds, which come from the Health Resources and Services Administration, will help create new initiatives at the school, including an accelerated licensing program for students in underserved + rural areas.
Sports
  • The Louisville Bats are now under new ownership. Diamond Baseball Holdings, which operates several other Minor League Baseball teams, has purchased the Bats. The local leadership + front office staff for Louisville’s ball club, like President Greg Galiette, will remain in place.
Plan Ahead
  • He’s just Pete — former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Pete Davidson is coming to Louisville. He will perform stand up comedy at the Louisville Palace on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. Pre-sale tickets go on sale today at 10 a.m. and general admission seats go live on Friday, Dec. 8.
Festival
  • Today marks 150 days until the 150th Kentucky Derby, and you can already claim a piece of memorabilia. Starting today, the Kentucky Derby Festival will accept pre-orders for next year’s Pegasus Pin. They will become available in retail locations in March. (WHAS11)
Legacy
  • Former University of Louisville President Donald C. Swain died last week at the age of 92. Swain served as president from 1981 to 1995, leading UofL to become a top-level research institution. More recent students will recognize the name from the Swain Student Activities Center — aka “The Sac.” (WLKY)
Edu
  • An elementary school fell — literally — just short of a world record earlier this week. Stopher Elementary attempted to set a record for the longest cereal box domino chain, but the chain of ~14,000 boxes didn’t fall down in one try. The cereal will be donated to Dare to Care. (WAVE)
Shop
  • Health.com called this vibrator the “Rolls Royce Of Sex Toys” — and it’s also clinically proven to improve arousal and alleviate dryness. Get it for 30% off ahead of the holidays.*

    From the editor
There’s a lot to love about our current batch of sports venues, like Louisville Slugger Field, the KFC Yum! Center, and Lynn Family Stadium — there’s not a bad view of the action in any of them.

But I grew up going to Louisville Redbird games at Old Cardinal Stadium, and there’s one thing those new venues are missing — that aroma of caramel corn and cotton candy. It gobsmacked you the moment you passed through the turnstile at the old place.
