Sweet heat is on the rise

Flavorman’s annual beverage trend prediction provides insight into the flavors, ingredients, and strategies for upcoming year. | Photo by Flavorman
According to Flavorman, things are going to heat up next year in the drink world.

The Louisville-based beverage development company — which has worked with household names like Jones Soda and Sunsweet Growers — predicts that sweet and spicy is on the rise for 2024. So, be on the lookout for more drinks with an opposites-attract-approach, like Mexican hot chocolate.

Here’s are a couple of Derby City drinks that are ahead of the sweet heat curve:
Aside from sugar and spice (and everything nice), Flavorman is also projecting an increased demand for guilt-free dessert flavors, like sugar cookie, red velvet cake, and brownie. The company believes consumers want more over-the-top indulgent flavors, but with a low-calorie tag. Thanks, Starbucks.

Flavorman also predicts a decline in the use of artificial colors and additives in drinks.

“They’re not doing anything to stabilize the beverage,” Flavorman’s Chief Technical Officer Kristen Wemer said. “Also, since everything these days is going into a can, the way the liquid looks is much less important.”

This time last year, Flavorman said that tropical and tangy would be the 2023 top trending flavor — and they weren’t wrong. Several Derby City companies took to the flavor, including Heine Brothers with its introduction of Boost energy drinks in flavors like Coconut Ocean Mist and Blue Razz.

Flavorman was founded in 1992 and has created 80,000+ drink formulations throughout its history. The company compiles its annual beverage trends by examining drinks projects that have passed through its laboratory over the last year.

Experience world-class performers with Louisville Ballet

Try This: Experience world-class performers with Louisville Ballet

Where can you see world-class performers at the pinnacle of their craft in Louisville?

Try Louisville Ballet. It’s the fifth oldest continuously operating ballet company in the country, attracting immensely talented dancers from around the globe to perfect the art of dance right here in Derby City.

Recently, we were able to experience the power and elegance of the Ballet for ourselves with a performance of “Giselle,” a classic tale of love and tragedy — think “Romeo and Juliet,” but with fewer lines and more ghosts.

What we tried:

During the two-hour performance, dancers displayed some of the most athletic + acrobatic skills we’ve ever seen. We especially noticed the emotion of the performance. We weren’t crying, you were crying.

Modica’s shimmering holiday cocktail is the gift that keeps on giving.

The Louisville-based drink mixer brand recently posted a how-to video for its Christmas Tree Drink that has gone viral, garnering 2.7+ million views Instagram.

Rather than emulate the flavor of a Christmas tree in a cocktail, Modica built a tree in a glass and topped it with a cocktail-filled ornament.

The boozy decoration is meant to be flipped over, pouring the cocktail into the glass. Talk about filling someone with holiday spirit.

The recipes

Green drink:
  • 4 oz Cucumber Aloe Margarita Mix
  • 4 oz clear spirit of choice
  • 2 oz water
  • 2 squirts green Watkins natural food coloring
  • 1/16 tsp Prism Powder edible glitter
Stir with ice and pour into ornaments.

Red drink:
  • 4 oz Cucumber Aloe Margarita Mix
