Derby City golfers love the sport so much, they even play in the dead of winter. They’re also already prepping for the 2024 PGA Championship at Louisville’s Valhalla Golf Club in May 2024.

But before you start dreaming of all the celebs you might spot at Valhalla, consider getting a few hits in yourself. Even if you’re new to the game, we’ve rounded up some ways for you join in on the par-tee.

Casual golf games

If you’re not quite ready for a full-blown golf outing, take some practice swings at Top Golf on Oxmoor Lane. Three floors of climate-controlled bays are open year-round, and start at $28 per hour. Or for a smaller-scale, kid-friendly option, check out mini-golf spots like the Putt-Putt Fun Center or Malibu Jack’s. And keep Puttshack in mind — its first Louisville location is slated to open next year.

Get a taste of Louisville as a flavor of ice cream

Calling all lovers of Louisville warm weather, and ice cream. We want to know — if Derby City was a flavor of ice cream, what would it be? What local ingredients would it contain? Would it be ribboned with locally procured sea salt caramel, or crumbled cookies from The Flour Shoppe?

Share your locally inspired ice cream flavor with us by Friday, June 30, and we may feature it in an upcoming newsletter — just make sure it includes one to three local ingredients (bonus points if you list the local spot to source the ingredients and include a catchy name for your frosty concoction).

Need some inspiration? Here are two examples to get your stomachs grumbling:

🇺🇸 US: A waffle cone of vanilla bean ice cream laden with chunks of apple pie.

🇯🇵 Japan: A taiyaki filled with taro soft serve and topped with a black sesame cookie.

I can’t wait to see what kinds of ice cream flavors y’all come up with. I must admit that I’m partial to gelato, but I also dig the vibe of old-school spots like Dairy Del and Dairy Kastle.

If any cold-treat shops around LOU are up to the task, I would love to see someone whip up something with li hing mui — just shoot me an email, and I’ll bring you some ingredients.
