It’s kind of a big dill

New pickleball venue opening on the riverfront in Louisville, KY

A new pickleball + “eatertainment” venue is headed to an acre of land within the RiverPark Place mixed-use development at 1515 River Shore Dr., just east of the Big Four Bridge at Waterfront Park.

The yet-to-be-named concept, which is the first of its kind in Louisville, will feature several outdoor pickleball courts, indoor and outdoor bars, dining options + a gameyard. The development is spearheaded by a local partnership between TEN20 Craft Brewery co-founder John Flodder and CORE Real Estate Partners co-founder Lee Weyland.

Phase one of the project is expected to begin this fall and includes building out the six pickleball courts and adjacent gameyard, as well as repurposing an existing 2,600-sqft building on the property for the restaurant and bar — which will be set up to accommodate guests pulling into the nearby marina and residents of the neighboring apartments. An opening date is slated for early 2023.

The forthcoming courts will join the growing list of places to play pickleball in Derby City, including the recently opened courts at Baird Urban Sports Park at 615 W. Main St. + the 12 ones added to Charlie Vettiner Park back in June.

In case you missed it, pickleball is the US’s fastest-growing sport. The game — which was first played in Bainbridge Island, WA in 1965 — combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong.

A literal hidden gem 🪦

If you ever shopped at the Hobby Lobby or Home Depot on Breckenridge Lane, you’ve likely passed a 19th century graveyard and never knew it — because it’s hidden in plain sight.

Located in the parking lot of the Springs Shopping Center (994 Breckenridge Ln.) and enclosed on all four sides by tall, red hedges is the Burks Family Cemetery.

The area used to be a farm in the mid-1800s run by James Burks and his family. Their land stretched from the Breckenridge-Dutchmans area to the Avondale subdivision off of Taylorsville Road.


James, his wife Matilda, and their three sons are all buried in the cemetery + the style of their headstones shows that the family was wealthy.

How to visit:
Look for the blue United States Postal Service mailbox at the back of the parking lot across from Shaheen’s. A small break in the red bushes there reveals a wrought iron gate you can enter through to view the burial site.

Editor’s pick: In 1999, Kentuckian Heather French Henry was crowned Miss America 2000. Her black talent gown has been on display at the Frazier History Museum for the last two years in the “Cool Kentucky” exhibit, but over the weekend it was replaced with her specially-made ivory and gold gown she walked in prior to the crowning ceremony.

DYK: The museum rotates artifacts to let them rest from exhibit lights — especially clothing and textiles as they’re more sensitive and can fade more easily.
