Logan Street Market celebrated its third birthday over the weekend and it got us reflecting on other Libra birthdays in Derby City.
For a quick astrological debriefing: ruled by Venus, people born under this astrological sign are known for their beauty, popularity, aesthetic sensibilities + diplomacy. Libra season lasts until Sun., Oct. 23 this year.
Here are a few places and people to wish a happy birthday this season.
🎂 Against the Grain, Oct. 3, 2011 | While this local craft brewery’s birthday has already passed, we’re better late than never. Celebrate with a brew at Public House on Bardstown Rd. or your choice of pit-smoked meat from the Smokehouse downtown.

🎂 The Belle of Louisville, Oct. 18, 1914 | It’s no surprise that this iconic, 107-year-old vessel is a Libra with her vibrant red paint and glittering lights strewn across her decks. DYK: When she originally launched out of Pittsburgh, PA her name was “Idlewild.”
🎂 Tom Bullock, Oct. 18, 1872 | Author of “The Ideal Bartender,” this Louisvillian was the first African American to publish a cocktail book + his book offers historians a glimpse into what people were drinking before Prohibition.
🎂 Waverly Hills Sanatorium, Oct. 20, 1926 | Though it first opened in 1910 as a much smaller facility, the Gothic structure we know and love today opened for business in 1926. It was able to accommodate 400+ patients as tuberculosis raged in Jefferson County.

Observe World Mental Health Day in Louisville, KY
Few things are as relaxing as immersing yourself in the world of a good book. | Photo by @nevf21
Today is World Mental Health Day — a day created in 1992 by the World Federation for Mental Health.
Acknowledging this day can be as simple as taking several deep, grounding breaths, indulging in your favorite self-care practices, or phoning a friend. If you’re looking to up the ante, the Frazier History Museum + 91.9 WFPK will be hosting an event to shed light on mental health tonight at 6 p.m.
Editor’s pick: Speaking of mental health, the exercise people are right. Unfortunately, I do feel better when I go to the gym and work out for at least 30 minutes. It helps me burn off steam from the day.
I’m a YMCA member — which means I have access to its 11 locations + Calypso Cove water park — but if you’re not, you can try a workout session at one of its facilities with a Guest Pass.
