Metro Council approves amended $1.3 billion city budget

Adjustments to the mayor’s proposal included funds to parks, homeless resources, and infrastructure.

The budget will go into effect on July 1, 2023 and end June 2024.

On Thursday, June 22, Metro Council unanimously approved the Budget Committee’s amended $1.3 billion city budget , which will go into effect Saturday, July 1.

Mayor Craig Greenberg presented his spending plan in April, and since then, the committee has held 36+ hours of special meetings to dissect the spendage, hear feedback from the public, and propose changes.

Without adding any additional debt to the mayor’s spending plan, here’s a breakdown of the four adjustments made to the budget to help fit the needs of Louisvillians.

Homeless resources

Infrastructure

  • $4 million added to the $26 million pot dedicated to general revamping across the county
  • $1 million to improving alleys
  • Increased funding by $1.5 million for bridge and road repair
  • $1.8 million appropriation for sidewalk extensions and connections + completion of Alberta Jones, Ward Avenue, Shelbyville Road, and Beckley Station
  • $1.1 million for pavement markings

Parks and recreation

  • Additional $4.9 million will go toward maintenance of parks recommended by Parks for All
  • $1.1 million for continued improvement of Elliot Park , a 4-acre Olmsted Park in the Russell neighborhood
  • $1.5 million toward improvements and expansion of Jefferson Memorial Forest
  • $1.5 million for the Kentucky Street Master Plan implementation
  • $1 million for California Parks & Community Center upgrades

Pools

  • Increased funding at $3.1 million to enhance both the Algonquin and Campy Taylor public pools
