Louisville’s most missed businesses

Last month, we brought you the story of W. K. Stewart, a bookstore that operated in Louisville for nearly 100 years. Since we were already taking a walk down memory lane, we asked you some of your other favorite long-gone Louisville businesses.

Sandy B. shared the following story with us: “A department store that was iconic in my life was Stewart’s, on 4th Street. It was upscale and my grandmother would occasionally take me there for a new outfit. I saved up and bought my first prom dress there. The store front windows were always decorated with seasonal displays. At Christmas, the displays were so beautiful and elaborate, people would stand three deep to watch the animated figures. Their Santa was wonderful and I took my kids to visit Santa there.”

Meanwhile, reader Chris G. recently came across some classic Louisville business-themed t-shirts from Mine and Yours, which has prompted a whirlwind of memories. Hit the button below to see more.

Kroger’s master florists will once again craft the garlands for the winners of the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks.

Did you know? Each garland is made in-store at the Middletown Kroger (12501 Shelbyville Rd.) the night before each big race.

After admiring the garlands, Louisvillians are invited to join in a Derby celebration throughout the store:
  • Kentucky Oaks Garland of Lillies: Thursday, April 30, 5-8 p.m.
  • Kentucky Derby Garland of Roses: Friday, May 1, 4-8 p.m.
Celebrate the Kentucky Derby with Kroger’s garland-making tradition.
We'll see you there
