Spring is humming

Last year, LPM reported that hummingbird researchers in Kentucky began testing some novel — and very small — solar-powered tags to help track migration patterns.

Spring approaches, and our feathery friends will be flying their way back to Derby City, including the ruby-throated hummingbird, which is expected to migrate through our area around April 1-15.

Try and see them for yourself at these Louisville spots:
  • Visit a city park, especially larger, wooded parks like Cherokee and Iroquois for a chance to spot hummingbirds.
  • Take a spring hike on a local trail — keep an eye out for flowers that may attract hummingbirds.
  • Bernheim Forest + Arboretum is home to the kind of open woodlands + meadows that hummingbirds love.
