Editor’s Reader’s Pick

Red paint drips down the front of a white building resembling blood.
Louisvillians love mystery, crime, and hororr fiction — we’ve got a whole bookstore dedicated to it. | Photo by LOUtoday
Earlier this month, we brought you a list of local authors to inspire your new year reading. We also asked you what you were reading and what books and authors — local or not — you’d recommend. Here’s what LOUtoday readers like you have on their shelves:
  • “Lee Child, David Baldacci” - Brian
  • “Karin Slaughter” - J.M.S.
  • “The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins” - Tammy P.
  • “Louise Penny” - L.S.H.
By the looks of it, LOUtoday readers love their crime fiction, with a little bit of self-improvement for good measure. If you’re looking for a local mystery, check out my interview with Louisville’s own Dwain Lee.

News Notes

Louisvillian

MeeshMeesh chef Noam Bilitzer did not win a James Beard Award last year, but he’s back in the running as a semifinalist for Best Chef of the Southeast in 2026. Finalists will be announced in March, with the winners selected in June.

Edu

The JCPS board has voted to close two schools as part of an ongoing effort to reduce the district’s budget deficit. King Elementary and Zachary Taylor Elementary will close at the end of this year, with affected students being given priority in the school choice process next year. (WHAS11)

Weather

Did you wake up to some snow this morning? There’s more where that came from. Expect dropping temperatures and high levels of precipitation through Sunday. Be sure to brush up on our cold weather prep tips. (WHAS11)

Number

$800,000. That’s how much the Louisville Metro Government just allocated to the Americana World Community Center’s current capital campaign, allowing the organization to renovate its ~10,000-sqft South Wing. This will more than double the size of the clinic + add a pharmacy among other improvements.

Eat

Feed Louisville has launched a new series of take-home meals called Zest, available at Rainbow Blossom, Fante’s, Value Market, and Billion Cup Coffee. These meals cost $11-$13 and include such items as salmon onigiri, chicken ceaser salad, and a vegan harvest bowl.

Jeff Brohm’s Cardinals landed a No. 14 spot in ESPN’s Way-Too-Early Top-25 rankings for 2026. Get game coverage, analysis, insights, interviews, and more from local experts of the Cards with Locked On’s daily podcasts.

The Buy

A great dermaplaning razor for unwanted facial hair. This reusable, plastic-free one comes with 11 refill blades and can remove dead skin cells, peach fuzz, and hair on the upper lip, cheeks, and eyebrows.

The Wrap

I’m usually a very slow reader, but over the holidays I speed-read Michael Crichton’s “Jurassic Park.” I can’t recommend it enough, and I’ve already checked out the sequel from our friendly local library.
