It was no blizzard of 1994, but Louisville saw a nice Derby City dusting over the Thanksgiving weekend — and more cold weather is on the way. We’ve rounded up some tips + tricks from Louisville Water to keep your pipes safe from Jack Frost.

  • Don’t wait — water starts freezing at 32 degrees, and you’re at risk of a frozen or burst pipe any time temps drop below freezing.
  • Wrap any exposed pipes in insulating materials — Think: foam tubing or fiberglass insulation.
  • Keep an eye out for any way cold can access you pipes — cover outside vents in the crawl space + keep your garage door closed.
  • Know where your shutoff valve is + tag it with a bright, waterproof label — you can pick one up at the Louisville Water main office.
  • Record your typical water usage — an unusual increase could indicate a leak.
