We know the question on your mind, Louisvillians — when’s it going to get cold? Thanks to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, we know what temperatures and precipitation trends to expect in our city for December, January, and February.
Reminder: The first day of winter is on Sunday, Dec. 21.
Temperature
Louisville can expect to see average temperatures this winter. That means an average daytime temperature of around 40 degrees. That doesn’t mean we won’t have select days that are much colder though — so keep an eye on the forecast and keep those pipes protected.
Precipitation
Louisville has a 40-50% chance of seeing higher than average snow and rainfall amounts this winter — but hopefully not as much as last year. Louisville’s average snowfall varies widely from year to year, from 2.2 inches in 2020 to a whopping 22.1 inches in 2025, the highest on record since 2003. If the blizzards do come back, we’ve got you covered with snow day safety tips and tricks.
The JCPS board voted unanimously this week to delay the decision to close any schools. Superintendent Yearwood will present an updated plan for how to handle students displaced by potential future closures at January’s meeting. (WHAS11)

Seasonal
PG&J’s will host its annual ugly sweater party this Saturday, Dec. 13, 5-10 p.m. Bring your holiday worst + your pup for boozy hot chocolate and music, plus hunt down hidden pickles for a chance to win prizes.
Eat
You’ve probably seen plenty of holiday coffees on menus around town by now — but how about a holiday hotdog? Red Top has a “yule log” on its menu all month at Mashup Food Hall. The all-beef dog is served with cream cheese, cranberry sauce, and candied pecans.
Try This
It’s the most bun-derful time of the year. Google Trends data shows that December typically brings about an increased interest in baking at home. If you want to prepare your own goodies in the kitchen this holiday season, we’re fans of this Derby Pie recipe.

What development projects are you watching?
Earlier this week, we asked what development projects you’d like to see more updates on. By far the most popular answer was Mid City Mall. If you’re eager to stay up to date on the latest news, consider this your (pre) weekend update:
UK architecture students will share class projects based on the mall tonight, 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the mall’s main hall.
A petition to “save Baxter Avenue Theatre” has racked up over 5,000 signatures in the last week ahead of an uncertain year for the Highlands landmark.

I finally ate at Ciao Ristorante last night and had the eggplant parmiggiana. It was some of the best eggplant I’ve ever had, I highly recommend it. I’m looking forward to trying Ciao’s brunch next time — I’ve got my eye on the cacio “egg” pepe.
