Gimme a break

Qannik the polar bear in the snow at the Louisville Zoo
Qannik will celebrate her 14th birthday in January. | KLS
JCPS students will be off for winter break starting Monday, Dec. 22 through Friday, Jan. 2. Whether you have little ones visiting for the holiday or you’re a “mom or dad who can hardly wait for school to start again,” we’ve got you covered.

See the arctic animals enjoying the cold in the award-winning Glacier Run or warm up in the HerpAquarium, jam-packed with rad reptiles and bewitching bats. The zoo is open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.

Purrfect Day Cat Cafe
Mix and mingle with LOU’s most eligible felines up for adoption while sipping on a beverage from the cafe. It’s the first cat cafe in the nation to adopt out 10,000 cats. Maybe it’s time to add to the family?

This affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution is filled with interactive and immersive exhibits that bring the Bluegrass State to life. Right now, it’s packed to the brim with fully decorated trees.

Kentucky Science Center
This downtown destination boasts movie showings on a four-story screen, traveling exhibits, and other special events. Fend of the snowy blues with a visit to the tropical islands of the Galapagos in 3D.

City Guides are presented by LouCity & Racing.

A raccoon in Virginia was the first victim to fall foul of holiday season merriment this year. Liquor store employees found the animal passed out in the bathroom after he broke in and had one too many. We recommend celebrating the holiday responsibly at a local happy hour. (AP News)
