Improving our parks

Louisville’s Olmsted Park Conservancy recently received a $5 million anonymous donation to fully renovate Chickasaw Park. It’s the second-largest donation the Conservancy has ever received.

In honor of this historic investment in Louisville’s outdoor infrastructure, let’s take a look at just a few of the parks overseen by the Conservancy.

Baxter Square
Louisville’s first public park may not be as big as the three major Olmsted parks, but it was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted’s firm. In addition to basketball hoops and grills, the park features a sprayground and playground for the kiddos.

Chickasaw Park
Fish from the banks of the Ohio in this 61.21-acre park. There’s plenty to get up and do on the baseball field, basketball courts, and tennis courts, and the kids will find fun on the playground and sprayground.

Cherokee Park
In 2021, the Olmsted Parks Conservancy received its single largest donation: $8 million to purchase 25 acres next to this major park. Cherokee’s main feature is the 2.4-mile Scenic Loop, which boasts separate lanes for vehicle traffic and recreational users.
