The Frazier Museum’s speakeasy event last week was a roaring good time. Bravo Dance Studio was on hand to teach everyone how to grapevine and twist like it was the 1920s. If you’re interested learning a few moves, consider checking out one of the studio’s classes.

Not interested in dancing? Take yourself back to school with one of these other classes instead.

Austin Allison sold his first company to Zillow for $120 million. Now he’s building another real estate innovator in Pacaso.

Pacaso has already made $110 million+ in gross profits to date by disrupting the $1.3 trillion vacation home market, and the same big investors that backed Uber and eBay have already invested.

But unlike Austin’s previous companies, everyday investors (like you) can invest in Pacaso as a private company. Over 10,000 individuals already have.

Invest before the opportunity ends Sept. 18. ‡*

Sometimes, a picture-perfect moment happens. Even rarer than that is for someone to catch it on film. Lucky for us, those moments are portrayed in this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year award. This is your sign to take the Louisville Zoo’s wildlife photography class to hone your craft.

Community

If you’re anything like us, you know that Derby City’s tourism professionals create unforgettable experiences every single day. The ROSE Awards honor their dedication across categories like culinary arts, event services, tours + transportation, and more. Submit a nomination by Wednesday, Sept. 10 at midnight.*

Fun Fact

The world’s oldest hotel has been welcoming guests since 705 A.D. under the ownership of the same family for 52 generations — Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan in Japan. Over 1,000 years later, The Seelbach opened, becoming Louisville’s oldest hotel.

Seasonal

There are 55 days are left until daylight saving time ends and the clock falls back one hour. Translation: It’s time to take advantage of golden-hour hangs after work while you still can. Might we suggest a sunset stroll through one of Louisville’s parks?

Eat

What is your favorite comfort food? For Kentuckians, spoon bread is at the top of the list, according to Reader’s Digest. We recommend sampling some for yourself at The Eagle — it’s served in cast iron with maple butter.

Read

If you’ve read “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” or “Dune,” you’ve read one of the titles on Mental Floss’ “13 Quintessential Gen X Books” list. These books are beloved for a reason, so there’s a good chance you’ll find them at one of Louisville’s independent bookstores. (Mental Floss)

Towering titans standing the test of time

We’ve all been there: Someone’s trying to give you directions by describing 10 lefts, 20 rights, and a jumble of cardinal directions. Isn’t it easier to just point out a landmark?

That’s exactly what we’re doing. Not only are these local icons easy to remember, but they’re all towers of some kind that you can see from quite the distance. And as a bonus, they’re all actually still here — no need to memorize where a White Castle was 20 years ago.

Louisville Water Tower Park
Located on the banks of the Ohio River, this historic site features the 185-ft Louisville Water Tower, which is the oldest ornamental water tower in the world.

Kaden Tower
While this East End tower is often misattributed to Frank Llyod Wright, it was his son-in-law, William Wesley Peters, who oversaw the project.

Churchill Downs’ Twin Spires
The spires at Churchill Downs are one of the most iconic images of the Kentucky Derby. They were built in 1895 to give the racetrack a striking appearance.

The Wrap

It was a busy weekend in Louisville. By my count, there were at least four or five different festivals going on this weekend — but there’s plenty more where that came from.

In just a few weeks, Market Street will close down for NuLu Fest. You can expect vendors, food, live performances, and more between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27.
