These bourbons can only be found in Kentucky. | Brent Schanding/LOUtoday
Fun fact: Kentucky distills nearly 100 labels of bourbon these days, but a few are produced in such limited batches they can only be found locally.
Here are some bourbons you’ll find almost exclusively in the Bluegrass State:
Brother’s Wright Distilling Co.Reserve Coal Mine Aged
This Appalachian entry to the bourbon market produces just 7,500 barrels each year on a farm overlooking the Tug Fork River in Pike County. Compare that to the 500,000 barrels produced yearly at Jim Beam, and you’ll understand why this small-batch bourbon is difficult to get your hands on.
Coal Picker Distillery Single Barrel
Pot distilled, aged in a private rick house + bottled by a team in the former Muhlenberg County coal camp John Prime famously sang about, there were fewer than 300 bottles of this bourbon available in 2023 — and they all sold out fast.

Yesterday, I attended a panel discussion at Cathedral of the Assumption with members of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and members of the Louisville development + preservation community.
Here’s what the National Trust’s President and CEO Carol Quillen said she sees in Louisville: “A real interest in preserving the particularity of the built environment.” She said Louisvillians are not just interested in preserving history, but in keeping alive for future generations the physical landmarks of our communities.
