🎶 Lipp service

Recently, we sat down with Cantor David Lipp, who will be leading the Community Second Night Seder at Congregation Adath Jeshurun (AJ) on Sunday, April 13 (which is currently wait-list only).

Cantor Lipp came to Louisville a little over 30 years ago after graduating from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. As a cantor, he leads the worship services and teaches congregants using his musical expertise.

Passover parodies

Cantor Lipp said, “There are hundreds, and I do mean hundreds, of Passover parodies.” If you’re attending the second night, you can look forward to Cantor Lipp’s rendition of Billy Joel’s “Piano Man” and a version of “Under the Sea,” which becomes “Into the Sea.”

Kentucky style of Jewish music

We asked him if he’d noticed a Kentucky style of Jewish music. He said, “Jewish music has the kind of elasticity that it can be adjusted and heard in more than one style.”

For example, he cited local musician Bridget Kaelin, who has “written a couple of Jewish pieces from her bluegrass ethos,” and Nathan Salsburg, another Kentucky artist. He said that while Salsburg’s music isn’t bluegrass per say, “He’s a local musician whose music might have some kind of future effect on Jewish music.”

    The Wrap

I looked more into Nathan Salsburg, and I’m glad I did. He is a critically acclaimed artist, and Pitchfork’s review of his album “Psalms” is worth reading, especially if you have an “obsession with history and tradition.”

But this is another sad story about me missing out on some cool vinyl. You guessed it — something I wanted is sold out.
