Declan’s Top Stories

Kentucky’s master of fantasy Larry Elmore | In July, City Editor Declan sat down with a childhood hero to discuss his decades-long career in fantasy illustration, including some of the most iconic “Dungeons + Dragons” artwork ever printed.
A Louisville science experiment flies to the International Space Station | How high do Cardinals fly? To space, apparently. In April, Declan interviewed UofL professor Stuart Williams about a physics experiment so sophisticated it could only be conducted in space.
Check it out: The history of the Western Branch Library | The first in an ongoing series, this article breaks down the history of the first Black-run public library in the US, located in the Russell neighborhood.

Jeff’s Top Stories

Louisville’s great burger debate | This rivalry is nearly as old as Old Louisville, the neighborhood where it resides. So which burger is your bun and only: Dizzy Whizz or Ollie’s Trolley?
10 nicknames for Louisville | You don’t always go by your full name, do you? From Derby City to Falls City, Louisville has lots of alternative titles — we found ten of them.
Places to cry in public in Louisville | Sometimes you need a good, old-fashioned, heartfelt cry. We found several suitable sobbing spots, including the Heigold House facade — like your last relationship, that door is going nowhere.

Time to give back

If the holiday season has you in the giving spirit, volunteering is the way to go. Whether you’re an animal lover, an artsy type, a natural mentor, or a health care enthusiast — there’s a nearby volunteer opportunity for you.

If you’re an animal lover

  • Louisville Animal Care Society | Turn your passion for animals into service by fostering or cuddling with shelter animals, exercising them, or assisting with administrative tasks + community engagement. Volunteers must be 16+ and agree to a minimum time commitment of two hours.

If you’re passionate about supporting local community groups

  • Louisville Urban League | This civil rights-focused organization has two main volunteer tracts: organizational + operational. Serve on one of its committees or aid staff and clients in the League’s programs as a mentor or workshop facilitator. Pro tip: Check the League website often for pop-up volunteer opportunities.
