A map of the US with multiple red pins marking spots in cities like San Antonio, Charlotte, Nashville, and Indianapolis
Put your favorite spots on the map — literally. | Map via Proxi
We’re putting together a map of unofficial locations that deserve a historical marker. We can’t wait to show you the finished product, but in the meantime, we thought we’d share a submission:

“Birdie & Vi’s. There are only two shanty houses left of what was a thriving community of African Americans. A church and bar, grocery and beauty shop was also there. We own the antique store / bar that is located where their bar and beauty shop sat. We feel as if we have saved a forgotten piece of Old Louisville. We even saved the original bar. This area may have been small but we feel as if it needs to be remembered.” — Susan O.

There’s still time to put your favorite location on the map. Submit your unofficial historical marker to our local map by clicking the button below. You have until Tuesday, Dec. 3.

News Notes

Holiday

Happy Thanksgiving. However you celebrate, we hope you enjoy a day of rest, reflection, and community. We here at LOUtoday are thankful for our city, and the fact that there’s always plenty to talk about.

Development

The Louisville Metro Government wants your input on a potential subsidy for the Joe Ley boutique hotel project. The $84 million project would build a 191-room, 7-story hotel in the historic space. A public hearing will take place on Monday, Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. at the Metro Development Center.

Coming Soon

Another indoor golf experience is heading fore Derby City. Golf-simulator Tee24 is teeing up its first Louisville location, in Middletown. Featuring 24 bays over 6,000 sqft, the location is planned for a February opening. Tee24 has locations in Clarksville, IN + three other cities in the US. (Louisville Business First)

Eat

The extra crispy Krispy Kreme on Bardstown Road has re-opened after sustaining a fire earlier this year. It was closed for ~six months — leaving a big (donut) hole in the community — following the blaze in May.

Community

After your Thanksgiving meal later today, you may feel like you need to trim down, just like some local trees. Stop by Zanzabar on Wednesday, Dec. 11 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. to learn the basics of tree maintenance, trim public trees + sip a pint of beer at a Pruning and Pints event.

Plan Ahead

There would be no Christmas without the Polar Express arriving on time. The Southwest Regional Library is hosting a Polar Express Pajama Party on Friday, Dec. 13, 6 to 8 p.m. All aboard for a reading of “The Polar Express” book + movie screening, games, crafts, activities + appearances from holiday characters.

History

Thanksgiving has lots of traditions: The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, turkey trots, and the food — of course — but for many it also means watching football. For decades, though, Louisvillians swapped the pros of the NFL on TV for local high school pigskin. Read up on Louisville’s lost Thanksgiving high school football tradition.

Sports

Louisville football hasn’t defeated Kentucky and lifted the Governor’s Cup trophy since 2017. Will the streak end this weekend? Get game coverage, analysis, insights, interviews, and more from local experts of the Louisville Cardinals with Locked On’s daily podcasts.
