🎄 5 ways to prep your home for the holidays

We asked, and you answered: The key to impressing guests is “setting the perfect vibe.” Before welcoming family and friends into your home this holiday season, consider these five tips to enhance the vibe in your spaces — at up to 80% off.

Yes, Black Friday came early. Now until Sunday, Dec. 1, you can snag the lowest prices of the year during Wayfair’s extended Black Friday sale. Psst... Check back on Dec. 2 for Cyber Monday deals, too.

Here’s what we recommend checking off your list:

1. Set the scene with seasonal decor

When your guests arrive, greet them with festive holiday decorations like these sparkling outdoor lights and this illuminated pine cone garland. It’s giving classy winter wonderland.

2. Upgrade the guest bedroom

If your old mattress lives in your spare room, it may be time for an upgrade. While you’re at it, these extra-soft luxury sheets and this chic upholstered bed were designed to wow.

Pro tip: Warm lighting makes for an extra-cozy atmosphere. These dimmable Edison light bulbs will do the trick.

3. Minimize clutter

Storage doesn’t have to be an eyesore. You can tuck away miscellaneous items (think: books and games) in this extendable coffee table and store shoes in this natural rattan shoe storage cabinet that always seems to be trending online.

4. Boost the bathrooms

A few simple changes will elevate any bathroom. Spruce up your linen collection with a new set of fluffy towels, and designate a mindful space to store them.

Pro tip: Swapping out the bathroom mirror can go a long way, and this modern corner-hang mirror is straightforward to install.

5. Don’t skimp on seating

It’s important that your guests have somewhere comfortable (and stylish) to sit. We think this best-selling linen accent chair or vintage-inspired velvet sofa would help pull together a living room. You could even go all-out with this contemporary massage recliner.

News Notes

Civic

The Louisville Metro Government has launched an Affordable Housing Lien Forgiveness Pilot Program. The program will forgive code enforcement liens on blighted properties, with the intention of increasing Louisville’s housing stock through the rehabilitation of those properties — aka making a house a home, literally.

Shop

Small Business Saturday is this weekend — first of all, drop your favorite small businesses over on our Instagram page. Then head to the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center in Russell for a small business market. Pro tip: Arrive early — the first 100 adults get a $5 voucher to spend at any of the vendors inside.

Drink

Thursday is Thanksgiving, but Wednesday night is Drinksgiving. Stop by a Thanksgiving Eve Party at the Whirling Tiger tomorrow, featuring jazz + drinks at 8 p.m., and stick around for musical performances from locals McKinley Moore and DJ See Tai starting at 10 p.m.

Pets

Club K9 in J-Town is hosting a Thanksgiving Dinner for dogs on Thursday, Nov. 28. From 1 to 5 p.m., bring a dish to share with other pup-lovers while your furbaby burns out some energy — you don’t want Fido jumping on the table to steal your turkey later that night. The event is free.

Sports

Can you kick it? LouCity wants you. Louisville’s men’s professional soccer team is hosting open tryouts on Saturday, Dec. 7 + Sunday, Dec. 8. Fun fact: The team has signed players to contracts from open tryouts, including Kyle Smith, who has since gone on to play in Major League Soccer.

We all know that Thanksgiving means a plateful of good food and quality time with family — oh, and the potential for awkward conversation.

We’re here for you, LOU. Rather than endure Uncle Bill’s prying questions or try to keep up with your Gen Z family member’s latest slang, here are three local stories to spark a great, local convo — so interesting that grandma will forget to ask why you’re not dating anyone.

Mary Street Midden Project

Your Aunt Stacy won’t believe this one: A Germantown artist + archaeologist has uncovered a 19th century dump and he’s taking the ~100-year-old trash and turning it into a museum.

You mean people want to look at someone’s trash? Yes, Grandpa, they will.
