River City Housing (RCH) — a local, nonprofit home developer — hosted a ribbon-cutting this week for “The Jenny.” The 1,200-sqft, three-bedroom house is Louisville’s first zero energy ready, passive house in the St. Dennis neighborhood.
Zero energy ready is a certification given by the US Department of Energy to a house that’s so efficient that a renewable energy system would offset most or all the home’s annual energy use. Passive buildings are made to be airtight + well insulated, and use the sun for heating in the cooler months.
So, how efficient is “The Jenny”? The numbers don’t lie.
It has a Home Energy Rating System rating of 11 — lower numbers are better, and the average in 2023 was 57.
It has an estimated monthly energy cost of $25 — the average is about $375.

Eat
It’s almost Pizza Week here in Derby City. Get $10 pies from pizza joints all over Louisville + check in on the app to enter to win prizes. If you’re looking for a head start, check out our guide to LOU’s pizza scene.
Environment
Know before you throw. Corrugated plastic yard signs are acceptable in household recycling — but the wire holders are not. Those must be recycled as scrap metal. Consider reusing your yard signs by repainting them for birthday parties or other celebrations. (KnowWasteLou)
Drink
It’s brine time, LOU. Next week is pickle week at TEN20 brewery. Stop in Monday, Nov. 11-Sunday, Nov. 17 for pickled-themed cocktails, including the dill-lightful martini + the pickled mule, a pickle beer, or a pizza topped with pickled vegetables.
Closing
Early Bird Bagel Shop will close its public-facing storefront in Schnitzelburg on Monday, Nov. 25, moving to the ChefSpace kitchen incubator space in Russell to shift its focus to commercial bagel production. The bagels will still be available through pre-order pickups, pop-ups, catering, and farmers markets.

I have been getting the weekly share from Rootbound Farm since this summer, and I’m loving it. It’s always a blast to try new vegetables as they come into season — local bok choy and tatsoi are becoming a new staple around my house.
