Trick or treat, smell my feet!”

Halloween is rapidly approaching, and you know what that means — time for a few tricks, hopefully more treats, and we’ll leave out that bit about the feet this time.

When it comes to getting the most out of Halloween night, it pays to make a plan. We’ve rounded up two trick-or-treating events around LOU this All Hallows’ Eve, as suggested by LOUtoday’s readers.

Norton Commons Fall Festival

This neighborhood came highly recommended when we asked for the best LOU neighborhoods for trick or treating. The best part is that Norton Commons celebrates its fall festival in Oval Park on Saturday, Oct. 26, so you can attend the festivities and still have Halloween night free for more. The festival starts at 2 p.m., with trick-or-treating from local vendors running 2-4 p.m. The kids can also enjoy face painting, train rides, and games.

Halloween on Hillcrest

The four-block stretch of Hillcrest Avenue located between the Crescent Hill and Brownsboro-Zorn neighborhoods goes all out for Halloween each year. Expect to see over-the-top decorations starting now, with most participating homeowners finishing their displays by mid-month.

Trick-or-treating runs 5-9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31. Pro tip: Expect it to be busy. If you’d rather go sightseeing to take in all the scares, consider parking on either side of the road and walking, rather than stopping your car at each house to admire the decor.

Boo at the Zoo

If venturing out on Halloween doesn’t fit your schedule, you can take a walk on the wild side at Boo at the Zoo through Sunday, Oct. 27. The annual event features trick or treating, rides, and special attractions like a costume contest. Bonus: you can even get up close and personal with real spiders in the “not-so-itsy-bitsy” Spider House.

    From the editor
Welcome to the Louisville Zoo, Kaji. The Sumatran tiger cub born in Derby City in July has officially been named Kaji — a portmanteau of his mother, Jingga and his late father Kami.

Mayor Craig Greenberg helped unveil the name alongside 8-year-old Skylar Bischof-Thomas, a patient at Norton Children’s Hospital — Skylar’s the one in the dinosaur costume.
