If you’d like to help our Appalachian neighbors from here in Derby City, there are a number of ways you can donate resources or support impacted people directly.
Artist Maria Andrade Troya
An Asheville, NC-based ceramics artist is coming to the St. James Court Art Show this weekend after her studio was flooded during the storm. You can find Troya in the 1300 Association Section on Magnolia Avenue, near Third Street. You can also donate to a GoFundMe supporting all the artists who lost studio space + work in the same building.
Hi-Wire Brewing
This brewery has a Highlands taproom, but is based out of Asheville, NC. The Hi-Wire headquarters, distribution center, and River District Arts taproom were all submerged and are “likely a total loss.” A second location sustained heavy flood damage, as well. Thankfully, all Asheville-based employees are safe. Louisvillians can visit the Baxter Avenue taproom, or donate directly to help out.
Hi-Wire Brewing Co.'s Louisville taproom is located at 642 Baxter Ave.
Here are more ways to help those affected by the storm:
You can donate money to help pay for supplies to the American Red Cross — give $10 by texting HELENE to 90999. There is also a critical need for blood donations.
The United Way has created a special Helene Recovery donation page.
The Salvation Army is providing up to 1,500 meals a day to victims of the Hurricane. Donate to the Relief Fund.
GoFundMe has created a direct Hurricane Relief Fund to allow users to donate without worrying about scams on the site.

AHOY sets sail
The AHOY Children’s Museum is breaking ground
The AHOY museum is expected to include indoor and outdoor areas for kids to explore, play, and learn. | Rendering by Portland Museum and Weber Group
A new children’s museum is coming in to dock in Louisville’s Portland neighborhood.
First announced in 2022, this expansion to the Portland Museum is called AHOY — aka "Adventure House of You.” The first phase, expected to be complete in 2026, will include a renovation of the Victorian house that will serve as the museum’s location, plus a glass atrium connecting it to the Portland Museum.
This Saturday, Oct. 5 marks the groundbreaking celebration for AHOY, and it’s part of the 11th annual Portland Art + Heritage Fair. Here’s a sample of what you can expect:
Local food and drink vendors, including Tommy’s Pizza, Haitian Exotica, and Shippingport Brewing
A live performance by The Louisville Leopards Percussionists
DJing and finger puppets by Squallis Puppeteers
Art vendors + installations
The Art + Heritage Fair is free and runs 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Portland Museum.
