Louisville has 200+ schools educating over 100,000 students. We’re giving you the 411 on enrollment, student-teacher ratio, tuition, and more (thanks to data from U.S. News & World Report) for the area’s major public + private schools. And don’t worry, there won’t be any homework.

Jefferson County Public Schools

DuPont Manual High, a Jefferson County Public School, is the top-ranked Kentucky high school and one of the top 90 high schools in the country, according to U.S. News and World Report.

Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) contains 170 schools for 94,393 students, according to U.S. News. Those include 104 elementary schools, 51 middle schools, and 24 high schools. Here are four fast facts about JCPS:
  • There is a 15:1 student-to-teacher ratio across the district.
  • 82.6% of JCPS teachers have 3+ years of experience.
  • JCPS spends an average of $15,126 per student each year.
  • The district employs 182 full-time counselors.
The application period for elementary, middle, and high schools typically opens in November + December. Specific application dates for the 2025-2026 school year are TBD.

The district includes 59 magnet schools + programs, which offer a specific, themed curriculum or a specialized learning environment — think: the heavy highway construction program at Fairdale High, the fine arts program at Highland Middle, or the Spanish language immersion program at Hawthorne Elementary.

  • The Louisville Metro Government will soon have its own Department of Transportation. The new department will oversee Louisville’s transportation network, enhancing safety, efficiency, and sustainability. It is expected to launch in January.

  • The Great Flood Brewing taproom in Middletown has poured its last beer. The brewery shut down the taproom over the weekend. The Highlands location (2120 Bardstown Rd.) is still flowing, offering sips like the Find A Way IPA daily.

  • In other brews, Pivot Brewing is for sale. The brewery is offering up its Louisville taproom (1753 Bardstown Rd.), Lexington taproom + production facility, and all intellectual property. It will be accepting bids through Wednesday, July 31.
Festival
  • The Sky Soul Festival is coming to Waterfront Park on Saturday, Aug. 10. The entertainment lineup will include Grammy-winning singer Anthony Hamilton + rapper Doug E. Fresh, and several other acts. Tickets start at $50.

  • Do-nut skip over this news — the Krispy Kreme location (3000 Bardstown Rd.) that caught fire earlier this year is set to be partially demolished. Exploratory demolition will allow workers to see where repairs need to be made. The store burned in late May. (Louisville Business First)
