NuLu Streetscape Project continues

The East Market Streetscape Project is moving forward. Construction is set to begin on the north side of the 900 + 1000 blocks of East Market Street on Monday, June 17.

The $12 million project will redesign the streetscape from Brook Street to Baxter Avenue — that’s about one mile stretched over nine blocks. The new-look East Market Street will include:
  • Protected bike lanes, including one created from a re-purposed eastbound lane of traffic
  • Landscape medians in two separate blocks to “serve as a gateway to the neighborhood”
  • Newly-planted street trees, increasing the urban canopy
  • Bumpouts at pedestrian crosswalks, offering more room as you walk
Business owners + residents along East Market Street will be notified at least 14 days before construction is set to begin on their block. Project officials say that businesses can remain open during construction, with pedestrian access maintained throughout the process.

Pro tip: If you commute down East Market Street, be sure to leave a little earlier during construction to account for any traffic delays.

Designs for the project show new bike lanes on either side of East Market Street, as well as pedestrian bumpouts + new trees.

The $12 million price tag is being funded by the Louisville Metro, state, and federal governments.

The project is tentatively scheduled to be complete on Oct. 10, 2025, but may fluctuate to accommodate festivals and events in the area.

REI Co-op is pitching its tent at the Paddock Shops (4350 Summit Plaza Dr.) this fall — just ahead of the holiday shopping season.

In case you don’t know, REI — aka Recreational Equipment, Inc. — is a one-stop shop for outdoor enthusiasts, offering gear + apparel for camping, cycling, hiking, running, fitness, climbing, and more.

REI is a co-op, meaning you can become a member to enjoy discounts and other benefits, but you don’t need to be a member to shop there. There are currently ~30,000 REI members in Louisville and ~79,000 in Kentucky.

Here’s what to expect at the Louisville store:
    • 31,100 sqft of floor space
    • A full-service bike shop staffed by certified mechanics
    • Brands like Black Diamond, HOKA, Patagonia, Snow Peak, and Vuori
Currently, the closest REI to Louisville is in Cincinnati — ~95 miles away.

It’s great to see the NuLu Streetscape Project moving forward, it’s been in the works since 2011.

Back then, William + Kate got married, we were all heading to the theater to see “Harry Potter” and “Transformers,” and I had just graduated high school.
