It’s about to be a new NuLu.

The East Market Streetscape Project continues, block by block.

Construction began on June 17 on the north side of the 900 + 1000 blocks of East Market Street, and that work continues. Starting on Thursday, Aug. 8, work will begin on the 700 + 800 blocks, impacting businesses like the NuLu Marketplace, La Bodeguita, and AC Hotel.

In case you missed it, the $12 million project is redesigning the streetscape from Brook Street to Baxter Avenue — that’s about one mile stretched over nine blocks. The new-look East Market Street will include:

  • Protected bike lanes, including one created from a re-purposed eastbound lane of traffic
  • Landscape medians in two separate blocks to “serve as a gateway to the neighborhood”
  • Newly-planted street trees, increasing the urban canopy
  • Bumpouts at pedestrian crosswalks, offering more room as you walk

Project officials say that businesses can remain open during construction, and pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the process.

Pro tip: If you commute down East Market Street, be sure to leave a little earlier during construction to account for any traffic delays.

The $12 million price tag is being funded by the Louisville Metro, state, and federal governments.

The full project is tentatively scheduled to be complete on Oct. 10, 2025, but may fluctuate to accommodate festivals and events in the area.
